Day 14 : What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger

The last day of 2019 rounded up a truly remarkable year for me.

Upon arrival back in school, I was invited to Rina’s place for a New Year party. At the stroke of midnight, we would race to the summit of the village where we would have a bird eye’s view of the tons of fireworks going off all around Bali. Under the dark sky where stars were splashed across like a painter’s canvas, it was truly a beautiful, poignant and unforgettable sight.

We then set off our own fireworks at a nearby rice paddy field. One by one they exploded under the starry sky—so beautiful they were that Iwan decided to set off four at a go. Big mistake. The smoke and sparks went bonkers and as I tried to scurry away to avert what I sensed was incoming danger, a big chunk of wild sparks caught my flailing right leg as they faded into the night, but not before leaving blisters and blood in their trail.

As I tended to my freshly acquired wounds and reflected on my sorry but hilarious plight in the wee hours of 2020, I can’t help but laugh aloud.

What are the odds of having two mishaps on consecutive nights. Both hurt like hell, yet the eternal optimist in me knew I wouldn’t change a thing of what I had experienced. After all, what doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger!

(P.S. Surprise bonus footage at the end to commemorate my New Year 🤣)
