Day 25 : Remember The Real You

Chica means a female friend in Spanish, and Vanessa would always address us “Chica, Chica!” affectionately like that. The three of us had developed a strong connection by now and it was always a delight spending time with them, cooking, chatting, sharing, laughing and most importantly, holding space for one another.

Today, Vanessa volunteered to facilitate an exercise called ‘Emotional Triad’ for us. In a nutshell, the exercise helps us recall experiences in our lives where we felt most powerful, amazing and truly ourselves, and through prompting, explore keywords that captured the beliefs, feelings and emotions we had experienced. Once we have the keywords, we can then go on to extract the 3 most empowering keywords that basically encapsulate who we are. Amazingly from my own experience, the 3 keywords turned out to be the exact things that I have always doubted in myself or thought I’d lacked. Yet they were all true—didn’t I experience all of them for real? It was mind-blowing, emotional, gratifying and liberating all at once.

We all have our own fears, insecurities, self-consciousness, what-nots. Most often, these are the things that hold us back from becoming the best versions of ourselves. Truth is, we are enough, and we have always been beautiful in our own right.

So, as I repeated these words in the safe embrace of my beloved Chicas, I recognized and remembered :

“I am Karen. Confident. Recognized. Expressive.”

This is the real me. Always have been, always will be.
